Violin & Its Bow
Played in orchestra, in chamber music, and by itself, violin has been the most popular instrument of all time. It was developed from earlier string instruments such as the vielle, rebec, and lira da braccio. The bow of the violin developed as well throughout the history. The major change, however, was made by a French bow maker named Francois Tourte. He is known as the father of the modern bow because he redefined the bow's length, strength, and shape. His work greatly affected the music field including performers, and composers.

Controlling the Bow
If you play the violin or any type of string instrument, you know that controlling the bow is one of the most important component. However, controlling the bow correctly and appropriately could be one of the hardest things when learning the instrument. As a student, I ran into this problem quiet often, if not every piece that I played. Through this website, I hope you learn about the history of the bow. And also learn to appreciate the changes made by bow makers, and understand the composers and their specific style markings.
